How to Calculate Tile & Flooring Requirements
Planning a flooring renovation, bathroom wall tiling, or kitchen backsplash project requires an accurate tile estimator. Using our online tile calculator and flooring calculator simplifies measuring, prevents running short on materials, and helps you budget accurately before purchasing.
Step-by-Step Tile Calculation Formula
Calculating floor tile needs follows a straightforward mathematical process:
- Measure Room Area: Multiply the length by the width of the room in feet (e.g., 10 ft × 12 ft = 120 sq ft).
- Add Wastage Factor: Multiply total square feet by your chosen waste percentage (e.g., 120 sq ft × 1.10 = 132 sq ft total requirement).
- Determine Tile Coverage: Divide individual tile area in square inches by 144 to get square feet per tile (e.g., a 12″ × 12″ tile = 1 sq ft).
- Calculate Total Tiles: Divide total square feet needed by the individual tile square footage and round up.
Why a Wastage Buffer Is Essential
Tile installers always recommend adding a 10% to 15% wastage buffer. When trimming tiles to fit around walls, plumbing fixtures, doorways, and corners, cut off pieces are frequently unusable. Furthermore, keeping a few extra tiles from the original dye lot is helpful for future repairs if a tile ever cracks.
